Where in the World Am I? Wednesday July 6 Portsmouth Virginia

Portsmouth is on the Elizabeth River directly across from City of Norfolk. The downtown area (olde Town) has been updated (urban renewal) and this landing is for the Ferry that takes people from Portsmouth to Norfolk. Even for the Tides Baseball games the Ferry makes a special stop at the Field to pick people up for Return to Olde Town Portsmouth. Olde Town has a significant number of historical homes. African Methodist Episcopal Church built by slaves is the city’s oldest black church.

Christmas time has an old town feel with barrels with burning wood, Christmas carolers, and Children’s museum open for fun. Just wandering the downtown area is like many towns who are bringing back their roots and the history of their beginnings.

The US Navy controls about half the facilities and is not on the tax rolls for the City limiting its tax base. The population is declining. Norfolk Naval Shipyard shares the harbor. Portsmouth has a Naval Hospital.
