Viva Elvis Cirque Du Soleil Review Must See

Entering the theater was impressive. Finding my seat was so close to the front was exciting and delightful. This was my lucky night. Not knowing what to expect after having previously seen two Cirque shows, La Nouba and Zumanity, I settled in my seat and started really looking around. There was room for drinks and a huge soft seat with plenty of room for each guest.

The curtain was records, LPs impressions on a huge red curtain. The theater began to fill with guests and lots of girls in Poodle skirts and hair design of those Elvis years. They were excited climbing from one row to the next on the arms of the chairs and scurrying everywhere. They were the pre-show. I like Elvis music and had seen several of his movies so I was really looking forward to this.

Blue suede shoes starts with dancers, acrobats, running and flying through the air and sliding down a slide inside a HUGE blue suede show. The actors had on blue suede shoes. Images of Elvis flash across a screen inside a GIANT jukebox as in a documentary. Not only were we getting a cross of Elvis songs but a cross of footage from his life.

The news reels playing in the background drew your eyes off the actors at times to see the story from the past while listening to Elvis sing and the actors dance, jump, spin, and slide. Total immersion.

This was exhilarating, exciting, and fun to peek into the past. The scenes cleared the cobwebs of a young girls memory of the times in the past. Dancers doing the jitter bug or lindy with period costumes of how the teenagers dressed. Makes it hard to sit and not dance. Don’t be Cruel!

Elvis was really cute. No wonder the teen girls were screaming. I had never realized how handsome the man was. This was wonderful. As I heard his voice and the actors interacting with the voice, my anticipation was Elvis would come out on stage. Elvis and Ann Margaret singing and dancing.

It was so real.

I love the trampoline and wall climbing that Cirque does. They brought those skills to this production with comic book characters and super heroes. It is mesmerizing to see them climb and walk on walls. Bounce to trampolines and up again on top of the scenery with incredible feats of height, flexibility, tumbling, twisting, jumping, length, and wind.

Yes it seems like they are like the wind.

Moving so fast, they become a blur to your mind and eye. Keeping up with the actions all over the stage keeps the heart happy, the mind occupied, and the eyes jumping.

Elvis was in the army. I forgot. There are the newsreel footage of his two years in the army. Shook the cobwebs of my mind again. Another peek into the man’s life and again feeling like he will come on stage at any moment. His music and voice engulfs you in the emotions of the words and melody.

There are so many great moments and actions in this production for anyone who enjoys the music and lived through part of that time. Could not help but love the many ways of showing Elvis, his music, talents, and life. Combining newsreels and live action draws my imagination to full tilt. The guitar in the air with acrobats. The many characters and items coming out of the ceiling and other places onto the stage keeps surprising me because all of a sudden it is there. Poof. Where did that come from?

The home movies of Elvis and Priscilla take us into their lives with both music and song from then and now. Very graceful and sensual act of two couples and hoops as they come close and tangle reminded me of some of the moves in Zumanity with the same powerful emotions.

There is much I am leaving out so there will be some surprise. The end is of course, Viva La Vegas song with dance girls with many of the actors in black plastic hair to simulate Elvis. Their costumes were the shiny sequins jump suits. This was the only costuming I was not crazy about. The plastic hair just did not do it for me at all. Attended October 15, 2010 show in Vegas.

By visiting Viva Elvis Website ahead of time, one could familiarize themselves with the scenes, the stories, and some pictures and videos OR like me go in blind and just enjoy. I have given you enough to whet your appetite, I hope. It is a must see show in my mind’s eye and heart. I liked it much better than the two previous shows I had seen of Cirque. Although I do love the Cirque show in the summer at Seaworld San Diego and went back multiple time to see that short show custom made for Seaworld.

Tickets specials are done throughout the year so get on their mailing list or check out their website by clicking the link at the end of  this paragraph. Great short video preview of show on the Website home Page  http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/en/shows/viva-elvis/default.aspx
