Movie Staycations
Finding less expensive ways to Escape from our daily hectic lives can be simpler than you think.
- See a Movie. Staycations are a period of time for relaxation near or in the home.
- Movies are available at the Library. Best days to go are Wednesday and Thursday after the new releases.
- There are the Express Boxes at Red Box or Blockbuster Express for one day rentals for $1.
- Online through Netflix either streaming if your Internet connection is fast enough or to your mailbox with no driving needed.
Those who are using Cable have spent all their vacation money on Cable service with many areas topping off bundles for the basics at $100 a month.
- Although there are a lot of channels, mostly there isn’t much watching on.
- Those wanting to cut back expenses have down graded cable or dropped it completely.
- Myself, I find there is very little of value on TV anymore even with more channels.
- The Weather Channel became my most popular channel.
For those who want the special going to the movies feeling there are options besides overpriced movies.
- There are the morning discount before noon at AMC Theatres. Some AMC Theatres only have this on the weekend except during school vacations or holidays where they extend this promotion.
- These are prices that only a few years ago were reasonable for a hour and half movie.
- For seniors on a tight budget there is all day Tuesday.
- For students on a budget there is Thursdays.
This is a great way to get out and away for a brief vacation from your routine. Just skip the popcorn and soda BUT do sign up for the Movie Rewards and enjoy those extras as special treats once you have gained enough points.

Love these ideas – I have to say we use Netflix sand LOVE it – the streaming is awesome – lots of choices, plays through our Wii. I’d get rid of cable except for USA!
Now if I could just find time to watch the movies… I just noticed Alice in Wonderland has been in my cabinet for months! Love Johnny Depp… Thanks for the advice!
I’ve been seriously considering canceling my cable. It’s definitely a money waster… and you’re right, we might be able to afford more of the good stuff if we cancel it. Thanks for the reminder.
These are great ideas. I watch most movies on my computer these days through Netflix instant viewing. And I have found can I watch the tv shows I like online on their websites or Hulu.
I have a couple other ideas for seeing movies on the big screen. In my town the public library and a local college show movies each week. These aren’t always newer movies (though sometimes they are), but still can be a great opportunity to get out and mingle with people who share your interests for little expense.
Be sure to explore your local library and check on lectures, museum passes, etc. available to the community.
Some good ideas here. i’d add a picnic in a beautiful park or a walk on the beach as a cheap and relaxing out of routine scape. Ar least I live close to the beach and it is always a good option…
I ditched the cable MONTHS ago and have stuck with just NETFLIX. There are plenty of SHOWS to watch pm there as well as movies. Saves us tons!

I wish everything was just as simple like when we were born. Those times when you need not to worry about anything ever at all. I don’t think seeing movies is my stuff especially if it’s not free.
