You can travel far and wide to explore some of the world’s lesser-known destinations – from the soothing tranquility of Dar el Said holidays to the remote beauty of Alonissos, a tiny Greek island that’s oozing wild good looks. But unless you’ve got the budget and the language skills to enjoy such lesser-known gems, sometimes you’re better off seeking out the sights and sounds of some of our more popular holiday destinations. And many of them are simply packed with great experiences.
Lanzarote is one such destination. This lovely sun-soaked island – part of the Canary archipelago marooned just off the west coast of Africa – is a fascinating place that provides a heady mix of tourist conveniences with wide open spaces and untamed rugged beauty. It’s a volcanic island that has had a pretty turbulent past. It emerged millions of years ago after the African and American continental plates separated, and violent volcanic eruptions created the foundations of this spectacular island.
These ancient eruptions scarred the landscape – leaving a captivating legacy of bizarre twisting rocks, deep crevices, lava fields and dusty plains – resulting in a somewhat lunar-like appearance.
Its dramatic landscape includes the El Jable desert and the Famara mountain range, of which the highest peak is Peñas del Chache. The hostile terrain continues underground where a network of caves and tunnels belie its turbulent volcanic past; the Tunnel of Atlantis is one such example, and is the largest submerged volcanic tunnel in the world. One thing’s for sure, if you’re after some weird and wonderful sights to add to your holiday snaps’ album, Lanzarote certainly won’t let you down.
What’s more, a holiday here needn’t cost the earth. Lanzarote holiday deals are widely available, meaning you won’t have to travel to the far reaches of the world in search of fascinating sights or memorable holiday experiences.
