As the Hurricane landed in Atlantic Beach many areas were flooded, trees uprooted, wind blown objects, storm surges up rivers, bays and floods many areas. Many areas are prone to flooding during squalls but with 24 hours of rain and wind it can be much worse. The initial pictures are the standard flood areas. Oceans are strong and the waves took parts of two piers, Sheraton Atlantic Beach and Bogue Inlet at Emerald Isle. Flooding was reported in Carolina Beach, Topsail, Atlantic Beach, New Bern, Fairfield Harbor, Oriental, Greenville, Edenton, Washington, and many other coastal cities or cities on waterways prone to storm surges. Salter Path in Atlantic Beach was one of my vacation spots for weekends. Camping at Salter Path Family Campground where they had a boat ramp great for my towed Cheshire Catamaran. My Orange tent and I went there many times with friends for sailing and fun. When a squall would come through the afternoon was spent up the road shooting pool. Atlantic Beach, a town not far from Cherry point Marines with lots of places to hang out. Upon returning the road was flooded, the campground, the Tent would be down and the space flooded but it was a weekend away, mini-vacation and all worth it. Salter Path Family Campground appears to be closed now. Hurricane Ophelia back in 2005 seems to have cause many places to just close afterward or sell to developers rather than take on the expense of clean up.

NASA has some great photos of the storm from Space Capture of Irene Landfall
The storm surge as high as 8 feet pushed water up the Pamlico sound up the Neuse River flooding New Bern and Fairfield Harbor (6 to 7 feet water levels) two areas prone to flooding.Their chances increase with these 24 hours of heavy rain, wind, water being pushed up the sound with the storm surge and extreme high tides. Many mobile homes throughout the area take on a lot of the flood waters. The tropical storm force winds blow shingles, objects, and trees to crash into objects or buildings. Power loss for over 400,000 homes and businesses is widespread in North Carolina and Virginia. Irene pounded Hatteras and rips roof off Goldsboro Mall. Weather Channel had good stories and pictures along the North March of IRENE
NASA Facebook page has pictures and updates
Air Travel was halted on much of North East with many cities closing down mass transportation in fear of tunnel and subways being flooded. Bridges were shut down because of the Hurricane force winds making driving unsafe. Major Roads are closed from down trees or overwashed or flooding. Waters coming over a road can wash an automobile off the road or off a bridge.
Boats are tossed on the rough seas and shaken from their moorings or pushed to shore and piled up on top of each other. The ocean is nothing to play with during a storm because of rip currents and huge waves. Many are shaken off their feet or surfers are pounded into the ground by the waves.
Social Media
Facebook and Twitter are a good way to get information
One of the most accurate ways to keep up to date is Social Media with Twitter being number one. Facebook has been a great place from areas where the Social Media person is updating or answering questions. One twitter user with the name Irene decided to take on the role of Irene the Hurricane and add both Humor and safety Tweets. The retweet of the Mayor message about the trash baskets being turned upside down added the message – hope they emptied them first. Irene left us with this last thought about Magic Mushrooms popping up after the Hurricane. Weather updates from Twitter Accu Weather

Hurricane Irene Leaves Norfolk Virginia heading to New York City
Flooding in the Tidewater Area hit the usual spots Norfolk and Portsmouth. The storm force winds downed trees and power lines with additional flooding from the storm surge. More will be known in the daylight. Tunnels and bridges were closed. Over 800,000 were without power. Trees toppling claimed lives. Trees across Interstate 85 closed the road. Rainfall of 9 to 16 inches fell across the state with over 100 roads closed. Massive flooding will still be possible in the coming days.
